Plant Profile – Tristaniopsis laurina LUSCIOUS

Tristaniopsis laurina LUSCIOUS is the new denser improved form of Tristaniopsis laurina.

The Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS features larger, shinier leaves almost double the size of the common Tristaniopsis laurina. The foliage is a gorgeous lush, dark green with a shiny appearance, topped off with a distinctive copper coloured new growth. The dense form makes Luscious highly desirable for use in many landscapes and makes it a great native alternative to the popular exotic Magnolia grandiflora Little Gem.

Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS has yellow flowers being produced in short clusters with a sweet perfumed scent. Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS will flower through January and early February giving some much welcome colour through the middle of summer.

Tristania laurina luscious
The branches on Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS make a great feature, as the new branches grow they develop a striking port colour that peels back revealing a patchwork of mottled cream bark. This provides excellent contrast because at any one time you can have quite dark stems mixed with the older branches and trunk which are smooth, creamy brown.

Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS will grow well in full sun to part shade and will grow to an approximate height of 7-12m.
Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS thrives in a wide range of conditions. It will tolerate frosts and periods of drought, but it is not suited to very dry inland areas which are exposed to hot dry winds without regular irrigation. Tristaniopsis laurina ‘DOW10’ pbr LUSCIOUS will appreciate extra water during establishment in dryer periods. It is very well suited to humid environments.

Change the colour of your Hydrangeas from pink to blue or vice versa.

Did you know the colour of your Hydrangeas can vary depending on soil PH and certain elements in soil which you can manipulate to get your desired colour.

PH is a scale from 1 to 14 with 7 been neutral, if your soil is less than 7 its said to be acidic and if its higher its Alkaline.

Warren from Downes Nursery has created this informative video for Home and Garden for Mere Mortals

Turn Hydrangea Blue

For Hydrangeas to turn blue 2 things are needed.

The soil needs to be acidic (around 5.2-5.5 is good)

Aluminium need to be present in soil (its what turns them Blue)

Some elements can only be absorbed by a plant if the PH is correct so to turn the Hydrangeas blue the plants needs to take up Aluminium and it requires an acidic soil to do this.

Aluminium is a very common element and makes up about 8% of the earths crust.

To lower your PH or turn the soil acidic you can do any of the following.

Add organic material like compost, manures, mulch etc.

Add Iron sulphate

Add Aluminium sulphate (which also helps if soil is aluminium deficient)

Add Sulphur

Turn Hydrangeas Pink

To turn your Hydrangea from blue to pink we need to block the uptake of Aluminium by the plant

To do this we need to increase the PH of the soil to around Neutral will normally do the job.

Increase to PH by adding Agricultural Lime a few times a year.

NPK fertiliser ratios and nutrient deficiencies

Warren from Downes nursery also presents for Home and garden for mere mortals YouTube channel, in this video he goes though NPK ratios on fertiliser and what it means.

The video also shows nutrient deficiencies and how to identify them.

When buying fertiliser from the garden centre it often has a N.P.K ratio on the packet which stands for.
(N) Nitrogen
(P) Phosphorus
(K) Potassium
These numbers refer to the percentage of each nutrient in the packet, the above video is a brief overview on these elements and how they benefit your plants. These 3 are referred to as Macro nutrients there are also micro nutrients like copper, magnesium, sulphur etc which the plants also need so it’s a good idea to buy a fertiliser that includes these.
